Megan & Carly at Terminal CIty ClubWe love this series where we interview our lovely Union Friends. We are always blown away by the passion and incredible talent in the Vancouver wedding industry and we wanted to share these amazing people with you all. So grab yourself a coffee, take a break and enjoy!

Friends, we’re excited to introduce to you today the lovely Megan Powell & Carly Anderson from Terminal City Club. (That’s Megan on the left and Carly on the right in the photo above). Megan is the Catering Sales Manager & Carly is the Catering Coordinator at the club and between the two of them they coordinate all of the weddings at Terminal City Club. The club is one of our favourite wedding venues in Vancouver. Not only is it elegant and grand, the staff there are so warm and welcoming that you immediately feel at home. Megan & Carly are a joy to be around and their passion for their work is infectious. We honestly could have talked with them all day. We hope you enjoy our interview with them as much as we did.

Carly & Megan, what do you love about weddings?

Megan: I love connecting with couples; after all the months of planning you really develop a relationship. Also, watching their vision come to life after all of the hard work, it’s incredibly gratifying.

Carly: Every wedding is different! I always wanted to work in an industry that was always evolving and changing to keep things interesting. Brides and Grooms may have similar ideas, however they always bring something personal and unique.

Terminal City Club weddingWhat is one of your most memorable experiences working at Terminal City Club?

Megan: It’s hard to nail down one experience but I have to say what my favourite part of working at Terminal City Club is the staff. I have never worked in an environment where hard work and fun are equal. I honestly look forward to coming to work because of the people. Every day we laugh. This is also the biggest compliment I receive after a wedding; as a private club I think we offer a unique personal approach to our service and menu creation.

Carly: My most memorable experience at Terminal City Club was during my practicum. I was only at the Club twice a week and every time I came in everyone was so warm and welcoming. Giving me high fives, friendly hellos and providing me with tips and tricks that would help me with school and entering the industry. It was always so great to be able to come into a work environment that was very professional however still knew how to make it comfortable for new employees and guests.

What is your favourite part of a wedding?

Megan: The grand entrance to the dinner reception. All the stress of the ceremony is gone and the Bride and Groom are SO excited to start the party. It never gets old, I love that moment waiting for the MC to announce the couple for the first time and opening the doors.

Carly: My favourite part of a wedding is the hearing the speeches from family and friends. It is always interested to see if friends will bring up silly stories that the couple doesn’t want their parents to know about or if their parents share an emotional moment. It is great to see their reactions and watch their guests experience that with them.

wedding guests enjoying Terminal City ClubWhat is your best piece of advice for an engaged couple?

Megan: Having great food and wine at your wedding will help keep guests happy and allows you to have a personal touch. Have a tasting, create a night out of it and ensure you are happy with what you are having!

Carly: Ask for help where needed, but don’t let there be too many cooks in the kitchen. It is great to have family’s advice, however in the end it should be your decision.

What is the one thing about you that not many people may know?

Megan: At one point in my life I wanted to be an actor, I even studied theater arts for a few years but found my life took me on a different path.

Carly: I am terrified of clowns, absolutely terrified.

What is your most prized possession?

Megan: My Bathtub – seriously. It’s nothing special but since the age of 13 I have had a bubble bath before bed. If I don’t get those 15 minutes of relaxing alone I go crazy.

Carly: I have two rings that were given to me from my Grandmothers. One was my Grandmother’s wedding ring; the other is a ring that my Grandmother gave to me when I was born. I rarely wear them because I am so afraid I will lose them, but they mean so much to me.

What was the best decision you ever made?

Megan: Moving to Vancouver in 2010 from Edmonton – I love this city!

Carly: Best decision I ever made so far, was reaching out to my department head at school to speak with an industry professional who had been working in events/weddings. He provided me with contact information for the Catering Manager at Terminal City Club at the time. I spent a day with her to get an idea of what it was like to work weddings/events. From there I contacted her again for a practicum opportunity at Terminal City Club, which then turned into this fabulous job I have! Amazing what a simple email can turn into.

If you could learn one random skill, what would it be?

Megan: To freeze time, that’s a skill right? I want to enjoy those great moments just a little bit longer.

Carly: I wish I could learn how to speak numerous languages very quickly. Being able to communicate and understand more people from anywhere in the world would be such a privilege.

What is inspiring you lately?

Megan: This is cliché but my Mother. She is such an intelligent strong woman with the best sense of humour. I hope I can accomplish half of what has in my lifetime.

Carly: This is also cliché, by my older brother. He has gone to school, got a successful job and bought his own apartment by 24. I think because he’s my older brother it also encourages me to incorporate a little friendly competition to do better!

If you could trade places with another person for a week, who would it be?

Megan: I would trade places with Avika Shaffer, he is part of The Lonely Island comedy group. I would trade with him so could hang out with Andy Samberg and make ridiculous videos all day. Oh man, those videos are hilarious!

Carly: I would love to trade places with John Lasseter the Chief Creative officer at Pixar. I love Disney and Pixar, and to be able to sit down with the creative teams from Walt Disney’s Studios and see how they come up with the ideas for their movies would be a dream come true! John Lasseter also has a very cool house with Disney memorabilia that would be amazing to see in person!

Thank you, Megan & Carly, for taking the time to talk with us. You two are gems.
