We love this series where we interview our lovely Union Friends. We are always blown away by the passion and incredible talent in the Vancouver wedding industry and we wanted to share these amazing people with you all. So grab yourself a coffee, take a break and enjoy!
Happy Friday, friends! We’re excited to introduce to you today the lovely Katie Elwood, a talented makeup and hair artist. It is always a joy spending time with Katie. Not only is she incredibly good at her work, she is also kind and funny. You instantly feel relaxed and comfortable around Katie’s calming presence (which is always a good thing on a wedding day!). We loved having coffee with her and finding out more about her. We’re sure you’ll love her too.
Holly & Roger: Why weddings? What do you love about them?
Katie: I really love weddings as a whole. Being with a bride and her bridesmaids while they are getting ready is so fun. Who doesn’t love getting ready with their girlfriends? It is a huge day for my clients and it is special for me to be a part of it.
H&R: What is one of your most memorable experiences in business?
K: I love it when I can teach a client a makeup trick that becomes a game changer for them. I had a moment years ago when I was taught a simple eyeliner technique that was one of the things that inspired me to be a makeup artist.
H&R: What is your favourite part of a wedding?
K: It is always really fun when I get to show a bride her completed hair and makeup. I’m touched seeing how excited she is and how much she loves it. The moment when the bride gets into her dress and the whole look that she has envisioned for months comes together is amazing as well!
H&R: What is your best piece of advice for an engaged couple?
K: Don’t sweat the small stuff. Enjoy it and try not to get so wrapped up in what everyone else thinks. Ultimately it is your day and you should enjoy it. If something doesn’t go according to plan no one will notice.
K: I don’t actually like wearing a lot of makeup. Personally, I prefer a more natural look.
H&R: What is your most prized possession?
K: My cat Bernice and my makeup kit and brushes.
H&R: What was the best decision you ever made?
K: Becoming a freelance makeup artist.
H&R: If you could learn one random skill, what would it be?
K: Photography! I really need to learn how to take better photos.
K: Friends of mine who are having great success inspire me on a regular basis. It is great to be surrounded by women who are all growing their businesses and doing well.
H&R: If you could trade places with another person for a week, who would it be?
A – Makeup Artist Lottie. I’d love to see what is in her makeup kit and what it would be like to work on one of her big editorial shoots.
Thank you so much, Katie, for taking the time to answer all of our pesky questions. We’re looking forward to working with you again soon.
